When it matters most
by martin davis artist
Well it’s just a few days to go now until my exhibition “Paint it black” starts at Leabrooks Gallery here in Derbyshire, UK. During the lead-in period I have been busy finishing off a large landscape (well more of a skyscape really) that I’ve wanted to form the centrepiece for the exhibition – hence the length of time to get it just right. I have to say that I am pleased with it although good old mother nature has done her very best to ensure her sunset colours are unmatchable….of course. Still it is definitely worth looking at and I don’t say that lightly – I don’t usually recommend my own work. If you get the chance please come along and take in some of my more highly contrasting pieces.
It is in any case the first chance you will get to see the above centrepiece “Evening glory”. And I promise, I promise, I promise NOT to do any more “sun” pictures!!
I must admit I am guilty of posting these posts without a second thought generally about how widely they’re viewed (I know shame on me, and yes it is one of my strategic goals to make a step change to improve my competence with these media things since the world now seems dominated by them) but there are some occasions, like this one just before a hard-worked for exhibition opens, when it matters most….and it’s to my chagrin that I am not better at it!
The other regret I have is that all the effort I have poured into said artwork has delayed by a matter of weeks/months my starting up with a different kind of artistic output – as per my new year resolution. Seems such a long time ago already. The one or two feeble efforts I have been making have only served to make me realise just how bloody difficult it is to work in a different way, you know looser (like all the artists I admire and rather envy if I’m honest), less uptight and painterly as I said last year! it’s just bloody hard! so I don’t know how successful it will all be. May well all just end in tears. But you have to try or you just end up in a rut painting the same thing over and over again…….now I love painting but I absolutely dread that.
Wish me luck then in my change of gear/direction now I’m free to give it a go. And here are a few tantalising details from “Evening glory” just to keep you going and to tempt you over to Leabrooks in the next few weeks.
